Building trust across borders: running Europe–Africa partnerships remotely
Video calls cannot replace a handshake, but disciplined habits can make distance feel smaller.

Most cross-border partnerships rely on screens for much of their working life. Time zones are friendly, travel budgets are limited, and yet trust still has to grow. These habits make the difference.
Meet in person early, and on purpose
Even one well-planned visit at the start of a partnership builds shared understanding that months of calls cannot. Use it to agree goals, meet the wider team and see the working environment first-hand.
Make communication predictable
- A fixed weekly call with a short written agenda and notes afterwards.
- A shared task board so everyone sees who owns what.
- Clear response-time expectations that respect each side’s working hours.
Be explicit about context
Assumptions about hierarchy, decision-making and feedback differ between cultures. Say how decisions will be made and how disagreement should be raised, rather than guessing. Ask questions that start with curiosity.
Share risk and credit fairly
Partnerships stall when one side carries the risk and the other collects the recognition. Agree early how costs, revenue and public credit will be shared, and revisit the arrangement as the work evolves.
Trust grows when promises are small, specific and kept.
Use your community
Trusted introductions, peer networks and community events shorten the path to confidence. This is a big part of why Remode invests in convening founders, investors and operators on both continents: relationships formed in person make every later video call easier.
